My very first blog post and I thought I’d kick things off by giving you an up close and personal introduction to little old me!
I’ve often shied away from getting too personal on the world-wide web (because… Well I think you can understand why!), but how in world will I connect with you if you don’t know anything about me?! So for anyone who cares to know about the things that make me all mushy inside, or how I save approx. £200 a year on something we all can’t live without, here goes my scoop on 25 random and quirky things that you may not know about me. Let a girl know if you can relate!
1) I never pay full price for online food shopping!
If we haven’t already met allow me to introduce myself, Fiona Bargain Hunter Kolade! Before getting married one thing that hubby made very clear was that food shopping is not his thing! He wouldn’t be the husband to do the supermarket run, nor would he be keen on sitting in the car and waiting whilst I did.
Having figured this out early on in our relationship, I concluded that once we got married I had two options, either I would put my name on his car insurance and do the supermarket run alone, or I would get acquainted with online food shopping and let the food travel to me! (I chose the latter)
Now one year and three months into our marriage, I’ve got to say this was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Not only have I saved us a year’s worth of car insurance fees, I’ve also managed to save almost £200 by using online discount codes and supermarket vouchers. Here are some of my favourite discount code sources:
- Voucher Codes (discount codes for more than 5000 brands)
- My Voucher Codes
- Tip: checking out the ‘offers’ tab on your favourite supermarkets website
2) My guilty pleasures are:
The Real Housewives of Atlanta, peanut M&M’s (borderline addicted), condensed milk and doner kebabs.
3) My favourite food is Nigerian fried rice
To my siblings, hubby and closest friends it’s no surprise that fried rice is my favourite food. As simple as the dish is; rice, vegetables and diced chicken/meat/seafood, it just never disappoints. I could eat this for a week straight and feel so content with life!
4) I don’t do horror movies
Under no circumstances, not even if you pay me, nope, no way, not interested!
5) Ich spreche Deutsch
People are often surprised and somewhat confused when I tell them that I speak German and work in Germany 40% of the time. Truth is I don’t blame them, it’s definitely not the career path I thought I would end up taking!
My love for the language began in secondary school, and continued right through college and finally university, where I had the opportunity to live and work in Germany for a year. During that year I met an amazing German/Nigerian family (the irony!), who pretty much adopted me as their own and made my year an unforgettable one, so unforgettable I would then go on to graduate and find a German speaking job.
6) Fave hot drinks
Just because it’s that time of the year, here are three super delicious drinks I can’t live without during the winter months. AMT Coffee – chai steamer, Starbucks – toffee nut latte, Options – Belgian chocolate mint, and last but not least a hot cup of Horlicks. If you’re sleeping on these, it’s time to wake up!
7) I’m a Bullet Journaler
I discovered the world of bullet journaling last year and since then I’ve been hooked. I keep all of my goals, wish lists, monthly food plans, habit trackers, blog editorial calendars etc in my bullet journal. It’s the reason I stay so organised and I’d be lost without it! (Not sure what bullet journaling is? Click here to find out more).
8) If it’s not ‘hot’ I can’t eat it!
I throw pepper on everything! On pizza, in soup, on sandwiches, on eggs, on vegetables… Everything! If foods aren’t spicy they often make me feel nauseous.
9) My travel bucket list:
The top places I would love to visit but haven’t yet are: Jamaica, Maldives, South Africa, China, Iceland, Cuba and Mexico.
10) I’m a pretty good cook!
Just ask my husband, he’ll confirm it! From a very young age my mum had us in the kitchen, even if we were too young to cook she would make us watch her at work. She was known amongst her siblings as a great cook, and passed as many of her kitchen tips and tricks on to us. As a result myself and my sisters are all known for being able to throw it down!
11) I hate washing dishes
If you want to punish me, make me wash dishes! I’m not a fan of the word hate but in this context it’s the perfect fit. Fortunately hubby doesn’t mind doing the dishes so I’m really blessed, but if he isn’t around I’ll sneak things into the dishwasher, after all that’s what they were made for!
12) A few things I love:
The grace of God, being cooked for, hot destination holidays, female empowerment, talking about hair care, Haagen Dazs Pralines and Cream, encouraging and empowering others, gospel music, my amazing husband and family, my irreplaceable squad, social media, Nigerian fried rice, massages and being organised.
13) Trying to be a boss chick
Besides my ‘9-5’ I have three other sources of income. I’ll be sharing on these in my ‘boss chick in the making‘ segment so be sure to check it out!
14) If I don’t pray, my life falls apart
This right here is no joke! Just like clockwork, the minute I begin to allow for material/worldly things to cloud my mind, and put God in second place, things in my life begin to fall apart, for example; I may become less confident, want to give up on my business ventures, lose interest in making an effort in my marriage, you name it. But the very minute I pray and give it all to God, just like that I feel whole again, and things start falling back into place.
15) Hair care lover
Many of you may know this but some of you may not. If there’s one thing I can talk about for hours on end it’s hair care, I even have a blog dedicated to it, and my very first encounter with blogging and social media started as a result of this.
16) I LOVE self development books
For the past two years I’ve challenged myself to reading more, and it’s made a huge difference in the way I think and articulate myself. I have a special page in my bullet journal dedicated to books I would like to read. Here’s a snapshot of some of the books I hope to read in 2017. [Dusty Crowns, The Rules of Life, Promote Yourself, The Richest Man in Babylon, Secrets of Six-Figure Women, Power of a Praying Wife, and many more].
17) My biggest pet peeves are:
When people chew/eat loudly, when people talk with their mouth full, and finally rudeness. (I can’t deal!)
18) Weight gain woes
I’ve been trying to gain weight for as long as I can remember. I’ve tried protein shakes, supplement drinks, supermalt binging, weight tracking apps, you name it, but somehow the scales don’t change. Apparently the weight may pile on when children come along, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
19) I have a ‘where I want to be’ complex
This is probably one of my husbands biggest pet peeves! It’s not that I’m not grateful for where I am now or the life that I’ve been blessed with, but more so that I’m a big dreamer, and always feel like I want to achieve more. I’ve specifically created a gratitude log in my bullet journal, to ensure that despite my desire for more, I always remain grounded and grateful for my present situation.
20) My morning routine
I must read my bible before I can go on my phone and check my emails or social media. God first, always!
21) Twelve names
Yes you read that right, I have twelve names! The story I’ve been told is that the family were very excited about my birth and everyone wanted to give me a name. As for what they are, we’ll save that for another day!
22) Strength Finder Test
According to the Don Clifton Strengths Finder 2.0′ test my strengths are: Belief, Futuristic, Intellection, Developer, Focus. This test was so accurate, I would highly recommend taking it if you want to better understand your strengths.
23) Gospel Music
I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeee Gospel Music! It’s my favourite genre of music and the perfect uplifter when life feels a tad bit tough! I love it so much I created a playlist of my favourite gospel tracks just in time for the launch of the blog. Check it out here and be blessed!
24) I’m a crier!
All it takes is an episode of the American Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, or an emotional scene in a movie to set me off in tears, oh and did I mention The Green Mile? This movie gets me every time!
25) Finally Fiona
I’m convinced that this blog will be one of the best things that has ever happened to me. It was created selflessly with a desire to give back and encourage women to be a better version of themselves. I’m so grateful for you all and excited about this journey!
The playlist has some of my favourite songs. I have eight names thought that was a lot lol.
Haha! There was me thinking I was the only one with so many names!!!
I can so relate to no 16, 17, and 19! I love reading as well!:) It’s a habit I started the summer of this year and it’s changed my mindset so much and just expanded my horizons! I also struggle with the ‘who I am right now vs who I want to be’ dilemma. I do agree with you that it is a good thing to be ambitious and constantly seek one’s self-development but like you said, it’s important to be mindful and grateful for the present moment we’re in. For one of my ’emotional health’ goals for 2017, I’ve put down being grateful. I want to write down at least 3 things I’m grateful for everyday. Lastly, lol, thank you SO much for sharing the bullet journal idea. I did a quick read and for an excessive list maker and journaler like myself, it sounds like a great way to switch things up and become more effective. It’s also my first time hearing about the ‘Strengths finder’ book so I’m definitely going to put that on my to-read list:)

OK.. Girl. . you have GOT to explain bullet journaling in more detail. Maybe explain how you do yours? I just visited the link you attached and the writer’s explanation has made it seem so overwhelming! I really want to try it. Could you please break it down a bit more… In ENGLISH preferably. Lol.
